Queensland Roars into Hyundai A-League
The Queensland team in the new Hyundai A-League is today proud to unveil its new name
and logo in conjunction with Hyundai at the Brisbane Motor Show.
The team, to be known as Queensland Roar FC, will play home games at Suncorp Stadium
when the new Hyundai A-League kicks off in August.
The name has a generic connection to the Queensland Lions Soccer Club, who were
successful in their application to Football Federation Australia for inclusion in the new eight
team Hyundai A-League.
While the name Lions has been synonymous with the Richlands based club among football
enthusiasts in Brisbane, in the wider community the likelihood of confusion between football
and AFL would have had a detrimental effect on the club’s establishment in the Queensland
The decision to change the name has also assisted the club in embracing Football Federation
Australia’s ideology of “New Football”, giving the code in Queensland a fresh start and a new
image to the many thousands of football followers in the state.
While maintaining a link to the past and the proud history of the Queensland Lions, the name
Roar exudes confidence, exuberance, excitement and power. It is making a bold statement
which will be echoed by the club’s activities on and off the field.
Assisting in the name change process was the Courier Mail who, in conjunction with the club,
ran a statewide competition seeking suggestions for the new name. Queenslanders in their
thousands took to the challenge, submitting a plethora of potential names. A brand new
Hyundai car was on offer for the winner.
The club is embarking on an aggressive marketing campaign encompassing schools, clubs
and the corporate world across the south east corner. Key target markets for the club are the
football community, kids, the general sports supporters and event goers.
On-field success is equally important for the new venture to have a successful first year. Roar
FC head coach Miron Bleiberg has put together an exciting mix of young talent and skilful
experience. The squad to date includes a mixture of Queensland, interstate and overseas
The squad will be finalised by the end of the month with pre-season training commencing in
March. Season tickets, membership packages and merchandise will also be available in the
