RECORD SET FOR STATE OF ORIGIN TICKET SALES

More than 30,000 tickets were sold yesterday for the two State of Origin matches to be held this year at the redeveloped Suncorp Stadium, the Deputy Premier and Minister for Sport, Mr Terry Mackenroth, said.

Mr Mackenroth said it was the most tickets ever sold in one day for State of Origin matches in Queensland.

"Suncorp Stadium will be a world class venue and these sales figures indicate footy fans are just as keen as the players to experience the atmosphere in the new ‘cauldron'," Mr Mackenroth said.

"The first match at the Stadium will be on June 1 when the Broncos clash with the Newcastle Knights.

"However the official opening will occur on June 11 on the day of the first State of Origin match and yesterday people queued for hours to show they weren't prepared to miss out on a ticket for this special day."

Mr Mackenroth encouraged any fans who hadn't bought their tickets to be quick because the game was headed for a sell-out.

"Suncorp Stadium is going to be an absolutely fantastic venue," he said.

"The closest seats are only six metres from the sideline and because of the way the stadium is designed every patron in every seat will feel like they are almost on top of the action on the field.

"The official opening on June 11 will be a special occasion and fans at the match will become part of history when they cheer Queensland to victory for the first time ever at the redeveloped Suncorp Stadium."
