No smoking would be allowed within the main arena at Suncorp Stadium, the Deputy Premier
and Minister for Sport, Mr Terry Mackenroth, announced today.
Mr Mackenroth said smoking would also now be banned at ANZ Stadium - a venue
previously managed by the Brisbane City Council but now administered by the State
Government.
He said smoking at both venues would only be allowed in designated open air spaces outside
the main dome areas surrounding the playing fields.
"This policy will bring both stadiums in line with how we operate at the Gabba," Mr
Mackenroth said.
"Smoking is only allowed in a few select areas away from the general public.
"It allows patrons to enjoy a day at the footy without the nuisance and distraction of second
hand smoke from other patrons at the venue."
Executive Director of the Queensland Cancer Fund, Dr Jeff Dunn, welcomed the State
Government's decision.
"It's great to see the government leading the way in reducing community exposure to passive
smoking," Dr Dunn said.
"Second hand tobacco smoke is generally not as big a concern in outdoor venues, but it can
still cause serious health problems for children, pregnant women and many other individuals
who suffer from allergies or medical conditions like asthma and heart disease.
"This initiative brings ANZ and Suncorp stadiums into line with the 'Gabba, Stadium
Australia, MCG and other major sporting venues that have already gone smoke-free.
"Even more importantly, it is very family friendly and will encourage many more parents to
take their children along for some of the best footy action Australia has to offer. "That is a great result for public health and Queensland sport."
