SUNCORP STADIUM REWARDED WITH 'RUGBY TEST OF THE YEAR'

The world’s greatest rugby venue, Suncorp Stadium, will host the world’s most anticipated ‘rugby test of the year’, the Premier, Peter Beattie, and the Deputy Premier and Minister for Sport, Terry Mackenroth, said today.

Mr Beattie and Mr Mackenroth said they were delighted with today’s Australian Rugby Union decision that Suncorp Stadium will host the Wallabies - England World Cup Final replay in June.

“This is just the best news – not just for Rugby followers, but it is a great reward for our commitment to build the Stadium,” Mr Beattie said.

“This will be the Rugby Test of the year.” The ARU today announced that Brisbane will be the venue for the Australia v England match on June 26, with Melbourne hosting Scotland on June 13 and Sydney hosting the second Test against Scotland on June 19.

Mr Mackenroth said the decision to reward Suncorp Stadium with the historic rematch was further proof that world class venues attract world class events.

“We always knew the ARU would do the right thing by Queensland following the outstanding contribution this State made to their successful hosting of last year’s Rugby World Cup,” he said.

“Suncorp’s popularity – especially its delivering 111,000 extra ticket sales for the ARU – had to rewarded.

“This rematch will provide an economic benefit to the Queensland economy through sports tourism generating more jobs for Queenslanders and increased opportunities for the hospitality industry.”

Brisbane embraced rugby last year with the city's tournament total of 406,330 spectators.

The ARU is contracted for four years to play a Test a year at Suncorp.

“We only want the best ones – and with this one we got it,” Mr Beattie said.

“It is truly fitting – the best rugby players in the world playing in the best rugby stadium in the world.”
