Suncorp extends stadium naming rights

Suncorp's naming rights to an iconic Brisbane stadium have been extended for a further two years, Queensland Sport Minister Phil Reeves and Suncorp Group Executive, Banking David Foster today announced today.

Mr Reeves said it was a great day for the Milton stadium.

"This first-lass facility delivers thousands of jobs and Suncorp's announcement today is great news for our local economy," Mr Reeves said.

"We are extremely pleased that Suncorp continues to value their association with the stadium and we greatly appreciate their ongoing support."

Mr Reeves said the extension would take the current naming rights agreement through to 2012.

"It is fitting that an iconic Queensland venue is named after an iconic Queensland company and through this sponsorship they will help the State Government maintain the venue to the highest standard.

"Suncorp has been a proud supporter of this venue since 1994, well before the State Government's redevelopment in 2003.

"The company has seen the stadium go from strength to strength, now attracting the biggest and best sporting and entertainment events for the people of Queensland.

"More than 5 million patrons have passed through the gates since the redevelopment and the name Suncorp Stadium has now become synonymous with major sporting and entertainment events throughout the world."

Mr Reeves said the venue, like Suncorp, played a vital role within the community by promoting a healthy and active lifestyle through sporting and cultural events.

"If people have good access to sporting facilities in their local communities, it makes it easier for them to get involved in sport and recreation.

"We all know playing sport and getting active is one of the best ways to improve our quality of life, both physically and socially.

"By ensuring Queenslanders have good access to sporting facilities in their local communities we will help achieve the Bligh Government's Toward Q2 target of making make Queenslanders Australia's healthiest people."

David Foster said the naming rights sponsorship of the Stadium formed an important part of the Group's sponsorship portfolio.

"Suncorp has been the naming rights sponsor of the Stadium since 1994 and we are proud to be associated with a world-class venue that provides so much pleasure for Queenslanders," Mr Foster said.

"Through our sponsorship portfolio, we focus on contributing to the communities in which we operate and the Stadium sponsorship, which is supported by a strong relationship with the Queensland Government, strongly meets this objective."

Suncorp underlined its commitment to grassroots sponsorship activities by announcing that its Bank would be a supporting partner of "EdRugby", the ARU's national education program for schools, and a naming rights partner of "Walla Rugby Week", which encourages schools nationally to participate in rugby activity.

Mr Foster also announced that Wallabies coach Robbie Deans had been appointed as a Suncorp Ambassador for the next two years.

"We strongly believe in supporting local communities and our involvement in grassroots programs such as EdRugby and Walla Rugby Week are evidence of this," he said.

"I know Robbie Deans is equally passionate about promoting rugby at the grassroots levels and his involvement as a Suncorp Ambassador will mean we can work together closely to achieve our aims."
