Minister for Sport, Tom Barton, today said Suncorp Stadium pulled another bumper crowd for the 05/06 season with nearly one million patrons passing through the gates.
Mr Barton said a total of 932,000 patrons attended 36 events at the Stadium this financial year taking the total number of patrons to have visited the venue to more than 2.5 million since the redeveloped venue opened in 2003.
“The increase in patronage and events is a result of Suncorp Stadium’s newest tenants calling the venue home. The Qld Roar played 11 A-League matches and the Qld Reds played six Super 14 matches at the venue,” he said.
“The patronage figures were up from 475,000 over 16 events in 04/05. The number of patrons catching public transport to the game also increased from an average of 82% to 84%.”
Mr Barton said 06/07 was looking just as busy for Suncorp Stadium with the remaining Brisbane Broncos home games and the Roar set to kick off in August.
“Following Australia’s excellent effort in the World Cup, I am sure there will be a lot of Queenslanders travelling to Suncorp Stadium to see the Roar in action this season,” he said.
“Sports fans also have a number of world class events to look forward to including the upcoming Bledisloe Cup match, an Australia v Great Britain Rugby League test in November and for music fans two sold out Robbie Williams’s concerts in December.”
Mr Barton said the Queensland Government wore a lot of criticism when we went ahead with the redevelopment of Suncorp Stadium but now it is one of the most popular venues in the country.
“The Stadium continues to be lauded by players, officials, spectators and indeed a number in the media as one of the best venues in the world. Certainly, in terms of facilities, service and atmosphere, I’ve not experienced anything else like it,” he said.
