Suncorp Stadium operator, Ogden IFC, advised the Queensland Government today that it was unable to proceed with the Cyclone Larry Benefit Concert scheduled at the Stadium on 25 June.
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Ogden IFC, Mr Harvey Lister, said there was little choice but to cancel, given the small, immovable window of opportunity in June when the concert could have been fitted in around the Stadium's busy period of major events. That schedule includes a State of Origin game, two rugby tests and a number of Brisbane Broncos home games.
He said there were also issues around maintaining a world-standard playing field during the winter months and the time required to repatriate the surface.
"It became evident that the immovable window did not coincide with the availability of quality acts under consideration for the concert," he said.
Mr Lister said "under normal circumstances, venues schedule a date around artists' availability, but that was not the situation here.
"In the entertainment industry, an element of good timing and good luck is needed to bring together artists prepared to contribute their time and talent on the same day. Unfortunately, despite best efforts, that didn't happen.
"The only decision given all of these considerations was to cancel the concert," he said.
