One of Europe's leading sport and event management executives has been appointed General Manager of Suncorp Stadium.
He is Mr Paul Sergeant, 45, who for the past three and a half years, was Chief Executive of the 74,500 seat Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.
Millennium Stadium with more than 1.3 million patrons a year is home to five major UK sporting bodies. It has hosted the 1999 Rugby World Cup final, FA Cup finals, Welsh Rugby Union Six Nation internationals, the British Speedway Grand Prix and concerts featuring Robbie Williams, Tina Turner and Bon Jovi.
Mr Sergeant replaces Alan Graham who is leaving to pursue private business interests and will retain a consulting role with Ogden IFC, the Stadium Venue Manager.
In announcing the changes, Stadium Chief Executive, Geoff Donaghy, paid tribute to Mr Graham who managed the Stadium through the pre-opening phrase and its ongoing development in the past four and a half years.
"The fact that Suncorp Stadium is now considered one of the world's greatest sports and outdoor concert venues is a tribute to Alan's dedication and commitment. He leaves the Stadium in excellent shape from a commercial and operational perspective and can be very proud of his achievements", he said.
Mr Donaghy said that while the venue had lost one world-class Stadium manager, it had been fortunate to replace him with another. He described securing Mr Sergeant as a real coup for both Suncorp Stadium and Brisbane.
"With 25 years experience in sports and events management, including the delivery of more than 3,000 major events, Mr Sergeant is rightly considered a global industry leader and was recently recognised with an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to business. As Chief Executive at Millennium Stadium and as a member of the Executive Board at Wembley Stadium and Arena before that, Mr Sergeant is very familiar with the three major codes of football played at Suncorp Stadium Rugby League, Rugby Union and Soccer. His management and commercial expertise together with his understanding of venue hirer and event stakeholder issues will ensure the Stadium's reputation as a world class venue will continue to evolve", Mr Donaghy said.
Mr Sergeant said he was very excited about his new challenge.
"Everything I have seen and read over the past four years indicates that Suncorp Stadium deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Millennium Stadium when it comes to world-class rectangular sports venues. My wife is Australian so it s a wonderful bonus that we re returning to her home city of Brisbane", Mr Sergeant said.
Ogden IFC is the largest venue management company in the Asia Pacific region. Among the venues it manages are Suncorp Stadium and Telstra Stadium in Sydney, the Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin and Kuala Lumpur Convention Centres, the Brisbane and Newcastle Entertainment Centres, Acer Arena (Sydney) and four State Theatres in Perth.
