Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium will host a Round 15 Telstra Premiership double-header as part of an action-packed week of Rugby League in Queensland that includes Game 2 of the Harvey Norman State of Origin Series.
The NRL today released its Round 15 schedule featuring Suncorp Stadium's second ever Telstra Premiership double-header on Friday, June 18, with the Brisbane Broncos tackling the Penrith Panthers at 7pm then the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs playing the Gold Coast Titans at 8.45pm.
The exciting week of Rugby League in Queensland kicks off with Round 14 matches on the Gold Coast, Townsville and Brisbane followed by Game 2 of the Harvey Norman State of Origin Series between Queensland and NSW at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday, June 16.
"More than 100,000 people attended Origin and the double-header in Brisbane last year and thanks to the support of the participating clubs, the stadium and our broadcast partners Channel 9 and Fox Sports we have again been able to provide this exciting week of action for Queensland fans," NRL Chief Operating Officer, Mr Graham Annesley, said today.
Queensland Sports Minister Phil Reeves welcomed today's announcement, noting the first double-header at the venue last year was an outstanding success with more than 50,000 patrons witnessing four teams battle it out in two games on the same night.
"It was a novel idea that Queensland Rugby League supporters were quick to embrace and it's great that the NRL, Channel 9 and participating clubs have all joined forces to make it a reality again this year," he said.
"It's no surprise that the NRL wants to hold matches like this at Suncorp Stadium. It's an ideal venue with the infrastructure in place to support major sporting events."
Mr Reeves said "blockbuster" events such as the NRL double-header were not only great for Rugby League fans but delivered significant benefits to the local economy.
