HORN FIGHT QUEENSLAND SPORTS EVENT OF THE YEAR

The Jeff Horn v Manny Pacquiao “Battle of Brisbane” world title fight held at Suncorp Stadium in July has been named the Queensland Sports Event of the Year.

The award was presented to fight promoter, Duco Events at the annual Q-Sport Awards in Brisbane on 30th November.

Suncorp Stadium General Manager, Alan Graham said the award was a win Brisbane, Queensland and sports fans alike and commended the fantastic team effort by all involved in delivering one of the most successful events ever staged at the venue.

The Battle of Brisbane broke all attendance and television coverage records for a fight staged in Australia. Not only did 51,026 fans fill Queensland’s premier sports venue to witness history in the making, the fight was beamed to an audience of 500 million in 159 countries, including 94 million in the United States who witnessed it live in prime time via ESPN.

Of those attending the fight, almost 20,000 fans – representing about 40% of the total – came from overseas and interstate, delivering a $25 million boost to the local economy. Brisbane hotels were filled to capacity with the Sunday night of the fight providing an 80% increase in revenue compared to the same Sunday in 2016.
