Darren Lockyer’s fans will be given a historic treat with the crowd to be allowed on to the turf of Suncorp Stadium to participate in his official Father’s Day farewell.
The special event will take place after Lockyer plays his final Broncos’ home match against the Manly Sea Eagles on Sunday, September 4.
Premier Anna Bligh said co-operation between the State Government and Suncorp that for the first time ever fans will be allowed onto the ground after fulltime when Lockyer will be presented to the crowd.
“It’s appropriate that fans should be able to farewell their hero on the hallowed turf of his home ground and be a part of rugby league history,” she said.
“Once official duties are completed at the end of the match, the teams will leave the field and then the crowd will be invited down on to Suncorp surface to mill around a stage at the base of the western stand.
“Almost since the day he made his first grade debut with the Broncos from the bench in Lockyer has been an inspirational figure to Queenslanders, this will be a fitting tribute for hi Lockyer and his teammates will then be presented onto stage for the crowd, with a host of digniataries on hand to honour the Broncos, Maroon and Australian legend.
Everything is set for a wonderful day for the supporters attending the already sold-out match said Broncos’ chief executive Paul White.

“We will of course have appropriate controls in place on the day to ensure both spectator enjoyment and safety.
“This will be a historic day for rugby league and we can think of no more fitting tribute to Darren than to allow the fans to be part of his official farewell on the very ground where he has made so many of them happy”
The Stadium is pleased to work in partnership with the Broncos to honour a Queensland football legend.
The protection of the playing surface and patron safety are always paramount but given the occasion, we are happy to consent to a one-off arrangement to allow fans to step onto the playing field to pay their tribute to Darren.
“Darren has been a wonderful ambassador for the game and also for Suncorp Stadium. It’s an honour for us to be hosting his last NRL fixture here”
“I do ask fans to show their respect for Darren and the occasion by moving to the field in an orderly fashion and following the directions of staff and PA announcements. This will help to make the event a success and ensure the safety and comfort of all.”
Fans will be asked to remain in their seats for approximately 10 minutes after the game until the all clear is given. Police and Security will then assist in ensuring an orderly movement of fans to and from the field of play area.
