Suncorp Stadium - 10 Years On Top Of the Ladder

Sports Minister, Steve Dickson has congratulated Suncorp Stadium on reaching its 10th anniversary milestone.

Tomorrow (Saturday 1 June), when the Queensland Reds run out to take on the Melbourne Rebels, it will be the 370th event to be held at Suncorp Stadium since 1 June 2003 when the Broncos had the honour of playing the first game.

Mr Dickson said in that time, the Stadium had hosted events such as nine games of the 2003 Rugby World Cup, Bledisloe Cup Tests, Socceroos Internationals and some of the world’s biggest performing artists such as Robbie Williams, U2 and Coldplay; witnessed by over 10.3 million patrons.

“For Queenslanders, the best moments have been witnessing our home teams achieve their dreams and seeing local heroes recognised,” Mr Dickson said.

“The Brisbane Roar’s back to back grand final wins, the Queensland Reds’ inaugural Super Rugby Championship, seven Queensland State of Origin series wins and of course the emotional public farewells for Broncos legends Darren Lockyer and Petero Civoniceva are among my favourite memories.

“Suncorp Stadium’s hosting of major events has had provided a huge economic boost to both the local Brisbane and wider state economy.

“The many major sporting events and concerts held there play a vital role contributing to the Newman Government’s target of a $30 billion visitor economy in Queensland by 2020.

“And in June, it doesn’t get any bigger than the Wallabies v British and Irish Lions Rugby Test and the Queensland v New South Wales State of Origin game,” he said.

Mr Dickson said the success of Suncorp Stadium was due in large part to its ongoing popularity amongst fans, players and sporting associations.

“The Stadium’s anchor tenants, the Brisbane Broncos, the Queensland Reds and the Brisbane Roar deserve a lot of the credit for building their brands and growing their fan bases to the point where they collectively account for the bulk of Stadium patrons,” he said.

“One of the Stadium’s greatest success stories has been the high acceptance in the use of public transport to events.

“Part of the attraction is the ‘travel free’ incentive with event tickets and the close proximity to transport infrastructure, the CBD and the Caxton St entertainment precinct.

“An average of 84% of patrons have used public transport to attend Stadium events which equates to more than 17 million trips on trains and buses to and from the Stadium over the past decade,” Mr Dickson said.

Since the redeveloped venue opened in 2003 Suncorp Stadium has hosted:

  • 165 Rugby League games for a total of 5,561, 696 patrons
  • 123 Soccer games for a total of 2,167,585 patrons
  • 73 Rugby Union games for a total of 2,245,807 patrons
  • 9 concerts for a total of 354,136 patrons

The Broncos hold the honour of the most number of games (128 for a total of 4,237,381 patrons) followed by the Roar (108 for a total of 1,545,577 patrons) and the Reds (59 for 1,574,860 patrons).

The record attendance of 52,498 is shared by State of Origin 2007, State of Origin 2011 and Bledisloe Cup 2006.
