Australia’s most popular rectangular football ground, Suncorp Stadium, welcomed its 10 millionth patron through the turnstiles at last night’s Queensland Reds v Western Force Super Rugby encounter.
Over the past decade, since the redeveloped venue opened in 2003, Suncorp Stadium has hosted 360 events comprising Rugby League, Rugby Union, Football and concerts.
Acting Sport Minister Tracy Davis presented Ryan Gillespie of Coorparoo the Stadium’s 10 millionth patron, with a commemorative framed “Gold Ticket” and two Suncorp Stadium Silver Memberships for 2013, with the Queensland Reds donating a signed commemorative jersey to celebrate the occasion.
Ms Davis said Suncorp Stadium played a vital role in attracting major events to Queensland.
“Suncorp Stadium’s reputation for staging world-class sporting events is well documented, and music promoters also see it as an ideal outdoor concert venue as evidenced by the number and quality of the artists that have played there over the years," Ms Davis said.
“Major sporting and entertainment events have a vital role in contributing to the Newman Government’s target of a $30 billion visitor economy in Queensland by 2020.
“With a great forward calendar including the British and Irish Lions Test, State of Origin as well as the Roar, Reds and Broncos, 2013 looks like another blockbuster year for sports fans.”
Suncorp Stadium General Manager, Alan Graham, said the success of Suncorp Stadium was due to its ongoing popularity amongst fans, players and sporting associations.
“We have come a long way from 2003 when we hosted a total of 20 events, to 44 last year. That growth is due in part to the Stadium being actively involved in procuring major new events.
“It is also a credit to the tremendous efforts of the Stadium’s anchor tenants, the Brisbane Broncos, the Queensland Reds and the Brisbane Roar who have built their brands and grown their fan bases to the point where they collectively account for the bulk of the 10 million patrons.”
Mr Graham said the design of the venue allowed fans to be as close to the field as possible and the strong events calendar keeps people returning.
“The venue is close to transport infrastructure, the CBD and the Caxton St entertainment precinct, which all helps to provide patrons with a special match day experience,” he said
Since the redeveloped venue opened in 2003 Suncorp Stadium has hosted:
- 161 Rugby League games for a total of 5,405,362 patrons
- 112 Soccer games for a total of 1,732,366 patrons
- 78 Rugby Union games for a total of 2,522,373 patrons
- 9 concerts for a total of 354,136 patrons
The Broncos hold the honour of the most number of games (124 for a total of 4,081,047 patrons) followed by the Roar (106 for a total of 1,516,698 patrons) and the Reds (55 for 1,445,086 patrons).
The record attendance of 52,498 is shared by State of Origin 2007, State of Origin 2011 and Bledisloe Cup 2006.
