Suncorp Stadium is undertaking a number of environmental initiatives.
Suncorp Stadium is leading the way among Queensland sporting venues in the harvesting of rainwater for field maintenance and post-event cleaning.
Recently, water storage capacity at the Stadium was increased by more than 350% with the installation of two new water storage tanks and increasing the size of the two existing tanks.
This initiative saw the total nominal storage capacity at the Stadium increased to 1.1 million litres, substantially lessening the Stadium’s dependence on town water supplies.
The two existing tanks at the Stadium were increased in capacity from a combined 240,000 litres to 387,000 litres, while the two new tanks with capacities of 450,000 litres and 275,000 litres were installed.
The Stadium collects rainwater from the 2.2 hectare roof and stores it in the new and existing tanks. It is used to irrigate the playing field, for post-event washdowns and for plaza irrigation and beatification.
About 50mm of rain is enough to fill all four tanks and provide the Stadium with enough water to irrigate the playing field for about 12 weeks.
Suncorp Stadium is also leading the way in recycling waste from events.
There are presently 180 colour-coded bins on the courses and corporate suite areas throughout the Stadium, making it easy for patrons to sort waste and recycling into the right streams.
In 2009, almost 80 tonnes of recyclable waste was collected.
