Chronological Events

 

1840 Originally established as cemetery by Rev John Dunmore Lang.
Up to 1875 Lang Park site was part of North Brisbane Burial Grounds and principal place of burial for Brisbane residents.
1876 Anglican community constructed Christ Church on site.
1890 Christ Church destroyed in storm.
1891 Current Christ Church developed and designed by diocesan architect John Hingeston Buckeridge.
1911 The Paddington Cemeteries Act (1911) was developed resulting in the cemetery being closed and graves moved to Toowong and Lutwyche. The site then became a rubbish tip.
1914 Site established as parkland - John Brown Oval after City Council alderman - used for cycling, athletics and soccer.
1955 Frank Burke persuaded QRL to sign 21 year lease on Lang Park with BCC.  Lang Park becomes official headquarters for code in Qld (first major stadium controlled by rugby league).
1958 First official rugby league match (12 April).
1959 First inter-state match NSW def Qld 24-14 (30 May).
1960 Rugby League Test - Queensland defeated France 30-18.
1962 Frank Burke Stand opened.
1962 First Rugby League Test - Great Britain vs Australia.
1963 The Lang Park Trust established under an Act of Parliament.
1965 First Rugby Union Test against South African Springboks.
1966 New ground record, Ashes campaign Aust vs Great Britain (45,047).
1970 First Soccer International - Qld vs Russian Club Moscow Dynamos.
1971 Lights officially switched on at match between South Qld and team from the QRL's Special Coaching Squad.
1971 QRL handed over control of Lang Park to Lang Park Trust.
1971 Work commences on the extension to the grounds - Ron McAuliffe Stand (eastern side of the grounds).
1972 Night baseball started at Lang Park - All Stars vs Ipswich (2,000 crowd).
1980 First State of Origin match (July 8).
1988 - 1992 Home of the Brisbane Broncos (top crowd 33,245 on 20 August 1989 Broncos vs Parramatta).
1992 Statue of Wally Lewis erected at the southern end of the Stadium.
1993 Broncos shift to ANZ Stadium.
1994 Redevelopment of Frank Burke Stand and Stadium to become Suncorp Stadium.
1995 South Queensland Crushers debut in national competition using Suncorp Stadium as their home match venue.
1999 - 2000 Government commissioned study investigating viability of creating state-of-the-art modern stadium.  Community consultation commences.
2001 Construction commences.
2003 Construction completed.
2003 First Game - Brisbane v Newcastle (June 1).
