THUMBS UP FOR STADIUM SURFACE DESPITE THE WET

Officials and players involved in last night's Socceroos v Indonesia Asian Cup qualifier have given the "thumbs up" to the Suncorp Stadium playing surface despite the challenging weather conditions leading up to the game.

Stadium General Manager, Alan Graham said today a total of 146ml of rain (or nearly six inches on the old scale) fell on the surface between Monday and kick-off at 7pm yesterday, hampering the ground-staff's preparation of the field.

"However the venue's excellent underground drainage system combined with the grounds-staff working around the clock to take advantage of breaks in the weather enabled the field to be perfectly prepared and for the game to proceed," he said.

The efforts of the ground-staff did not go unnoticed by the players.

Qantas Socceroos captain Jason Culina said that considering the amount of rain that had fallen in Brisbane, the pitch was still in a fantastic condition for the match.

"There were no problems with the surface and we really enjoyed playing on it," Mr Culina said.

Mr Graham said players loved playing at the venue, not only because of the atmosphere and intimacy but because they can display their full array of skills, knowing it is a true surface.

"This was no more evident last week with Suncorp Stadium being voted the best surface by players in the just completed Hyundai 'A' League season," Mr Graham said.
