Suncorp Stadium penalty spot for sale for a good cause

Sports fans are being offered a unique opportunity to purchase their own piece of football history and by doing so will be supporting the efforts to rebuild Queensland after the recent natural disasters.

Sport Minister Phil Reeves announced that a small but important part of the hallowed Suncorp Stadium playing field will be auctioned for sale on Ebay from today.

“The spot at the northern end of the field from where the penalty shootout occurred in Sunday’s epic Hyundai A-League Grand Final will be removed,” Mr Reeves said.

“The piece of turf will be presented as a piece of memorabilia to help raise funds for the Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal.

“Fans will have one week to bid and I expect there’ll be intense interest in acquiring this unique memento from what was one of the greatest grand finals in Australian football history.

“This is a great opportunity to own a piece of sporting history, and the exact spot that saw the Brisbane Roar claim the A-League title.

“They can bid knowing that if they are ultimately successful, the proceeds will go towards helping Queensland recover from the floods and Cyclone Yasi.”

The 38cm square piece of turf will be presented on a wooden base with a Perspex cover and will include a commemorative plaque and Certificate of Authenticity.

In addition, the winner will receive a 2010/11 Hyundai A-League match ball signed by the grand final winning Brisbane Roar squad.

Bidders should be aware that the turf is a natural product and to preserve it, it will need to be planted in the yard or a garden.
