Suncorp Stadium today welcomed four new members into the venue’s Media Hall of Fame.
Ray Warren, Tony Durkin, Bernie Pramberg and the late Wayne Smith now join the 13 previous inductees with the Minister for Sport the Hon. Michael Healy on hand to welcome the new members.
The Media Hall of Fame was established in 2006 and recognises the contribution the media have played in the coverage of sport over many years at Suncorp Stadium.
Highly regarded amongst their peers, the four new inductees share nearly 20 decades of experience with many of these years spent celebrating events at Suncorp Stadium.
Suncorp Stadium General Manager Alan Graham said it was important to celebrate the sporting history in Queensland and show appreciation to those who have played a role in promoting its sporting identity.
“Ray Warren, Tony Durkin, Bernie Pramberg and Wayne Smith all have had a lasting impact on sports coverage at Suncorp Stadium and this is reflected by their inductions here today,” he said.
Tony Durkin has been honoured as a dynamic, versatile media ground breaker known for his work with the Brisbane Broncos and Queensland Rugby League Week.
The late Wayne Smith is credited not only as a fierce news-chaser with an Olympic legacy, but as having suggested in print that Brisbane should bid for the Olympic Games.
Legend of the cauldron, Bernie Pramberg, has a connection with Suncorp Stadium spanning more than half a century and remains one of the most admired journalists in the history of rugby league in Queensland.
Ray Warren, the voice of Rugby League, called over 40 State of Origin games at Suncorp Stadium, countless NRL games and his final game before retiring, the 2021 NRL Grand Final. Watch Ray Warren's acceptance speech here.
The afternoon also included a moment of silence for veteran journalist and friend of the Stadium, Mike Colman, who sadly passed away over the weekend following a prolonged battle with a rare lung disease.
Established in 2006, Jack Reardon, George Lovejoy and Frank O’Callaghan were the inaugural appointees into the Suncorp Stadium Media Hall of Fame.
Steve Ricketts and Gerry Collins in 2014; Barry Dick and Wayne Heming in 2017; the late great Billy J Smith in 2019; Jim Tucker, Paul Malone, John McCoy and Ross Lawson in 2021; and Pat Welsh in 2023 have since followed.
Located on Level 5 of the venue outside the Media Suite – the Wall of Fame acknowledges the close relationship Suncorp Stadium has with the Media.
Inductees must be nominated by media organisations and supported by Stadium Management before being approved for inclusion by the Stadium Queensland board.
