NRL Brisbane Magic Round
Sun 17 Jun, 2018
All 16 NRL Teams will play at Suncorp Stadium over three days next year as part of NRL Brisbane Magic Round.
The NRL today announced that NRL Brisbane Magic Round would be held as part of the 2019 NRL Telstra Premiership Schedule.
NRL Brisbane Magic Round will be played over the course of Friday night, Saturday and Sunday in May 2019, in partnership with the Queensland Government (through Tourism and Events Queensland) and Brisbane City Council (through Brisbane Marketing).
With two matches scheduled for Friday night, three for Saturday and three for Sunday, all at Suncorp Stadium, NRL CEO Todd Greenberg said NRL Brisbane Magic Round would be a first for the NRL.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our game and create a festival-like occasion for a Premiership Round,” Mr Greenberg said.
“We have seen the success of our double headers in recent seasons but this takes the concept to another level.
“There are enormous benefits to a full Round in the one location.
“Obviously, there will be significant exposure for such a unique round and it will be a wonderful promotion for all our Clubs.
“We’re extremely grateful for the support of the Clubs, the Queensland Government, Brisbane City Council, Suncorp Stadium, and our broadcast partners Nine and Fox Sports who have provided unwavering support to ensure this initiative became a reality.
“We’d expect the people of Brisbane to support the festival nature of what will be a wonderful spectacle for Rugby League and their city.
“We’re also extremely confident fans from across the country will attend, with great entertainment planned around Suncorp Stadium as well as the city of Brisbane and Queensland in general.”
Clubs will undertake community engagement initiatives in the lead-up to NRL Brisbane Magic Round, including school programs, junior development and participation programs, coaching and training development and other community activities.
Mr Greenberg said NRL Brisbane Magic Round was one of a number of new initiatives planned for the 2019 Telstra Premiership.
He added the ongoing support of the Palaszczuk Queensland Government as well as Brisbane City Council was significant.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the 2019 Magic Round would have enormous economic benefits for Queensland.
“Magic Round will give Rugby League fans the opportunity to witness the most exciting weekend of footy in 2019 in Brisbane, while giving the public the chance to get up close to their sporting heroes,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
“I expect Magic Round to be the marquee event for the 2019 draw.”
Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said that Brisbane was chosen to host the inaugural Magic Round once again demonstrated the city’s reputation for staging major events.
“Major events support our local economy and create jobs right across Brisbane with their economic impact expected to rise to a record $165 million this financial year,” he said.
“Brisbane will be in the sporting spotlight once again when all 16 NRL teams play a round in the one venue and is set to attract thousands of visitors to fill our hotel rooms and boost our local economy.”
The full schedule for NRL Brisbane Magic Round will be announced through the release of the 2019 NRL Telstra Premiership draw later this year.

STADIUM MANAGEMENT AWARDED
Wed 26 Aug, 2015

AEG Ogden has secured Suncorp Stadium management rights until the end of 2020 following a Stadiums Queensland tender process.

Stadiums Queensland went to market earlier this year seeking tenders from suitably qualified companies to provide Venue Management Services at the iconic venue.

Stadiums Queensland Chairperson, Sophie Devitt, said while there were several very creditable and well credentialed proposals received, the AEG Ogden bid best met all key criteria.

“Stadiums Queensland was seeking a proponent with proven expertise in stadium management that could efficiently manage stadium operations while still providing the necessary high level service to hirers and a great experience for the fans,” Ms Devitt said.

“AEG Ogden has proven experience in successfully managing events of a diverse nature in a wide range of venues, locations and operational environments. This decision provides certainty for our hirers, tenants and stakeholders moving forward.

“Suncorp Stadium is widely regarded as one of the best venues in this country by players, fans, administrators and promoters. With AEG Ogden’s engagement as stadium operator for a further 5 years, Stadiums Queensland is confident this reputation will continue.”

Chairman and CEO, Harvey Lister said AEG Ogden was pleased and honoured to be re-appointed the venue manager of Suncorp Stadium for a further five years.

“Since AEG Ogden was appointed in 2002 to open and manage the venue, it has established Suncorp Stadium as one of the world’s leading sports and outdoor concert venues,” Mr Lister said.

“The consistent feedback we have received over the past 13 years from international teams and artists clearly rates Suncorp Stadium as among the best venues in the world.

“AEG Ogden has always considered the Stadium as one of the ‘jewels in the crown’ of venues it manages and looks forward to taking the venue to another level during the next five years.”

General Manager, Alan Graham said Suncorp Stadium had strategically developed strong relationships with all of its hirers and worked with them in partnership to grow the number and quality of events delivered and to maximise their commercial opportunities at the venue.

“We have established a close business relationship with other partners, concert promoters and Government agencies to deliver a range of blockbuster events that appeal to Queensland sports fans and concertgoers and provide significant benefits to the local economy,” Mr Graham said.

“We also recognise the importance of being a good corporate citizen within our local community and will continue to work with local residents and businesses to ensure a harmonious co-existence.”

The tender process was managed through respected consultancy firm, KPMG with appropriate probity oversight in place.
