NRL MAGIC ROUND MAY 17-19
Greetings from Suncorp Stadium! Footy fans and concertgoers alike will be able to snapshot their experience in style, with Suncorp Stadium unveiling a Postcard mural on its Northern Plaza ready to welcome visitors to the venue. The contemporary artwork incorporates several themes to demonstrate the breadth of the Stadium’s events program and its relevance to the state and the local community. The postcard-inspired mural lends itself to being used on a variety of occasions and is expected to be a popular backdrop for fan photos, media opportunities, as well as social media exposure on event and non-event days alike. Suncorp Stadium General Manager Alan Graham said the postcard-inspired mural concept was for everyone to enjoy throughout the year. “It was important for us to capture all the different event types we hold here as well as the Stadium’s relationship with and connection to First Nations people. “We’ve worked with First Nations leaders who loved the idea and were very supportive of the final imagery” he said. “We’re expecting to see a great response from patrons, tourists and locals with the plaza often used by the general public throughout the year,” he said. The 84m2 mural was installed by local artist Zion Vaega who said the main sporting teams at the Stadium inspired many of the colour choices in the design. “The colours of the piece include an orange lining around Suncorp for the Brisbane Roar; crimson on the deep lining for the Queensland Reds; gold in the background for the Brisbane Broncos, and a vibrant red river for the Dolphins. “The design also included a gold ribbon in the background for Australian rep teams and of course, a deep maroon in the background and silhouette of the story bridge and Brisbane skyline for the Queensland Origin teams” he said. “There is even a rising sun in the background, a nod to the Suncorp Stadium logo.” Patrons at the Dolphins V Wests Tigers match on Saturday got the first look at the freshly commissioned work on the plaza near the Wally Lewis statue. This weekend another group of footy and soccer fans will have the chance to see the mural with a Brisbane Broncos v Dolphins clash on Friday night before the Brisbane Roar take on Newcastle Jets at the Stadium on Saturday. A plaque dedicated to Pre-Origin Queensland Rugby League players has been temporarily relocated while the venue considers designs for a reimagined State of Origin recognition piece.
